Nutrition Facts For Arizona Soda - Calculate Sugar Per Serving

Rethink Your Drink

I had just set the table with a delicious healthy spread for my family, when I heard my husband crack open a bottle of what sounded like a soda. He asked my boys “Who wants to share this with me?”… and I cringed. I’m pretty sure he thought the can of fruit juice cocktail he was offering them was healthier than soda…a common misconception for most people. The packaging is also misleading because it states “Vitamin C Fortified” which people automatically think must be healthy. This extra large can contained 75 grams of sugar! That’s almost 19 teaspoons of sugar!
The food label lists the serving size as 8 ounces (1 cup) and there are technically 3 servings per can but we all know that most of us do not share a can of anything. If you look closely you can see that the food label also states that it “contains 5% juice”… which means 95% of it is pretty much sugar, water, and coloring.

Here’s a tip on how to calculate the number of teaspoons per serving of any drink.

4 grams of sugar = 1 teaspoon of sugar
Divide the total grams of sugar listed by 4 to calculate the number of teaspoons of sugar.

Extra calories from added sugar- like those in sugary drinks- can and do contribute significantly to overweight and obesity. In fact, sugary drinks are the largest source of added sugar in the American diet.

Sugary drinks also contribute to increased risk for certain chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
